Three upcoming AI and election-related bills, led by U.S. Senator Amy Klobuchar, often referred to as the Big Tech sniper, will be marked up for debate next week, Axios reports.

This is the first time bills addressing AI's impact on elections will be debated as the U.S. heads toward a presidential election later this year (2024).

A markup is a process that usually follows a public hearing to hear from lawmakers before a bill is considered. During the markup, amendments and other changes to the final bill are discussed.  After the markup, the AI bill is likely to be introduced in Congress. However, there are many different opinions on AI regulation, making it difficult for a unified bill to emerge.

미국 올해(2024년) 말 대통령 선거로 달아오르는 가운데 AI의 선거 영향력을 담은 법안이 처음 토의되는 것이다. 마크업은 보통 공청회 이후 진행되는 절차로 법안 처리에 앞서 의원들의 의견을 듣는 자리다.

마크업에서는 최종 법안 상정을 위한 개정 등의 논의 된다.  마크업 이후 AI 법안이 의회에 상정될 가능성이 큰 셈이다. 하지만 AI규제에 대한 의견들이 다양해 통일된 법안이 나오기도 어려운 실정이다.
