Competition in the global streaming market is heating up, with another major media group joining forces. Warner Bros Discovery, which owns HBO and CNN, and Paramount Global, which owns CBS and Paramount Studios, are reportedly in talks to merge.
A combined company would have a market capitalization of $40 billion and could rival Netflix and Disney. The combination of Paramount and Warner would also create an absolute powerhouse in free ad-supported streaming TV (FAST), which is becoming a major trend in the TV market.
The merger between the two companies has been widely analyzed for its synergies. If WBD and Paramount Global became one company, the level of content available for streaming distribution would increase significantly. Large libraries are very positive about streaming going global. In particular, Paramount's children's content (Nickelodeon, etc.) could be a boon for WBD. However, the fact that the two companies would have a combined market share of nearly 30% of the film studio market is expected to give regulators pause.
