As competition in the streaming service market intensifies, the number of subscribers in the North American market is slowing. Even Disney had fewer subscribers in the April-June quarter of 2023. In response, Disney has started to secure hidden streaming profits. Disney announced that Disney+ password sharing ban policy will be implemented in Canada, U.S, starting Nov 1, 23. Meanwhile, also beginning Nov. 1, the company is set to launch the Disney+ ad-supported plan in Canada (priced at $7.99/month) as well as the U.K. and eight European countries.

The success of cracking Down on Password-Sharing is yet to be determined. However, as the growth streaming market is slowed, crackdowns on subscribers who share accounts are spreading to other services. Prior to Disney, Netflix launched an paid account-sharing program in more than 100 countries in mid-May 23. It blocked subscribers who illegally share accounts or made them pay extra to share Netflix accounts with non-family members.

It is also time for Korea to consider restricting password sharing. Local streaming services in Korea are also in need of a new source of revenue as the deficit is getting worse. Experts said that in the case of local streaming, it is necessary to seriously consider introducing an advertising model.
